On the lash; My Favourite Waterproof Mascaras

Since discovering makeup in my teens, I've known that I wasn't blessed in the lash department. I've also known that the only possible (affordable) solution to my perpetually downward pointing, poker straight eyelashes is a daily appointment with a pair of shu uemera curlers and lashings of waterproof mascara.

My lashes have always annoyed me and curling them every single morning became as routine as getting dressed, but recently I got married and decided to go for a full set of lash extensions! (check out my blog post on my favourite Kat Von D products here for a pic of me with the lashes on from my wedding day).
I’ve had extensions once before and had a good experience but this time...not so good. I have been left with a very gappy lash-line with the occasional occurrence of minuscule stumpy lashes. I could kick myself at how much of an idiot I was to choose value over quality but I didn’t think it would make such a big difference. My lashes are still in recovery mode but I read it could take months for them to fully recover :(

Anyway, you live and learn and I have learnt to become a proud member of the natural lash appreciation society so in the spirit of this I want to introduce you to two of my favourite curl maximising, volume inducing, length-giving mascaras that I will NEVER take for granted again!

I have tried many waterproof formulas since discovering it's curl fixing capabilities a few years ago and I thought I would share with you a couple of my favourites for staying power, volume, length and perhaps most importantly for waterproof mascaras, removability!

BUDGET:
Maybelline 'the falsies' waterproof.
This is a real gem and one that I purchase over and over. Super affordable, possibly one of the best brushes I've ever come across and boy oh boy does it lengthen! The falsies has great staying power on both top and bottom lashes (once dry) and it holds a curl all day but it's also not a nightmare to remove with an oil-based makeup remover.
Initially, it has quite a watery formula so can easily transfer before it dries and this consistency also means it doesn't really do volume as well as others. However, I like to deliberately dry it out a little by leaving it open for a day or so, then it works wonders for length and volume! If you aren't necessarily looking for maximum volume and are one of those lucky individuals that already have a denser lash line (we can never be friends), but want to maintain a curl and lengthen then this is definitely the one for you!

LUXE:
Dior Iconic overcurl waterproof mascara.
When I get ready for work at stupid o clock in the morning I do like a one-stop shop when it comes to mascara and this is my firm favourite for everyday use right now and probably, of all time. I curl my lashes, pop a couple of coats of this on and voila! It's incredibly volumising, which goes perfectly with my staple feline liner flick and it stays put all day.

The brush has a great curved shape to catch all your lashes in one swoosh and I find it covers them evenly whilst separating along the way. I have friends who have not gotten on so well with this mascara as it has a tendency to dry out rather quickly but for the reasons mentioned above I don't mind this as it helps to create even more volume. However if you already have a thick lashes, this might be overkill and end up looking clumpy on you so I refer you back to Maybelline falsies in that case! Removability of the Dior overcurl is more troublesome than the Maybelline falsies and requires a good oil-based cleanser and some elbow grease but I think its worth the effort!

  1. I had a similar experience with lash extensions (never again!!) and have been using the enhancing serum RapidLash to help with recovery. It has been great at filling in the bald spots! Having used high end and drug store mascaras I always opt for drug store. I get on well with the Maybelline formulas and regularly use Volum' Express The Colossal Big Shot but am curious to try the Dior...
